When teaching sentence fluency, my students also circle the first word and count the number of words in each sentence on an SOS sheet (save our sentences). This helps them combine sentences or break up run-ons, as well as eliminate the same beginnings. Before this, I made templates for minilessons that require the students to begin with gerunds, adverbs, etc. (like a madlib). That gets them to think outside the box when it comes to sentence structure. Another hint is to take the end and put it at the beginning. Lots of modeling is needed for them to to this independently.
