Modeling is always a big help for students. You could make up a chart with different types of questions and an example of each type. For instance, the chart could have "Questions about the setting- Where did Opal and her father live when the story began?" and "Questions about characters- What are some words that describe Winn-Dixie?" Some students will copy these questions practically word for word (at least they will be good questions) and a few will be able to expand on them. Either way, they will have a visual reminder of what you are looking for in the questions.
