Even though you are not in the most opportune situation, you could expand and talk about things like foreshadowing, three ring comparisons with the students life, the movie and the book. It stinks that he is so much further ahead but the book and movie are quite different and personally (as I am in a similiar situation with this novel), I spoke to my class about the richness of this novel as well as the benefits to reading along with the class. We zereo in on different details, ideas and concepts to expand on so have some fun with this book, it's awesome!!!!!!
