PLAYGROUND MAP By HEIDI

Building on the idea of them making their own coordinate grids, how about going out to the playground and having them make a map of the area? See if all the kids create the same map or if some said the monkey bars were just a bit further over, etc. Great higher-order-thinking-skills for the kids to evaluate their maps and those of their peers! They could even do a map of their bedroom, or house, or neighbourhood. Photocopy some onto overheads and put them up for class discussion. The kids love that!I played battleship ont he board with the class last year to introduce the concept and the whole class scored 100% on the coordinates math test. It helps them make a connection between math and a game they know.
