PLAYGROUND MAP
By HEIDI

Clip to ScrapBook
Building on the idea of them making their own coordinate grids, how about going out to the playground and having them make a map of the area? See if all the kids create the same map or if some said the monkey bars were just a bit further over, etc. Great higher-order-thinking-skills for the kids to evaluate their maps and those of their peers! They could even do a map of their bedroom, or house, or neighbourhood. Photocopy some onto overheads and put them up for class discussion. The kids love that!

I played battleship ont he board with the class last year to introduce the concept and the whole class scored 100% on the coordinates math test. It helps them make a connection between math and a game they know.
