Cathy-Dee, you always seem to have the right words! You're right that the bathroom may actually be the problem! My niece hated to use the bathrooms at school because she couldn't stand the smell of them. They were neat & clean, as school bathrooms go, but she's sensitive to some smells and the cleaners they used really bothered her. Every day she'd get off the bus & dash off to the bathroom!
At our school, the toilets automatically flush, activated by a sensor. Some of our younger students are actually afraid of this & refuse to use the bathrooms. It's either the sound, which can come quite suddenly, or the old fear of being "flushed" themselves. We've started to cover the sensor in one stall with a plastic cup & direct those students to that stall.
