introducing content

Clip to ScrapBook
You could introduce the material with a video about the subject matter. Also, consider having the students read in small groups of four and then discuss the material through guided questions that you have already prepared.
I know that doing the round-robin thing is very boring for the kids. Even paired reading is a good idea. I also have the kids read and complete a newspaper on the subject matter. Also, they pretend that they are reporters. One is the interviewer, and one is being interviewed. They read with a partner, then prepare an in-depth interview with a historical character: "And today, ladies
and gentlemen, we are meeting with Abraham Lincoln. Mr. Lincoln, could you tell us a bit about the Emancipation Proclamation that you signed?" My students enjoy doing this last activity. Hey, if you want to, you could even have them dress like the characters they interview.
