The second grade teacher and I are using Harcourt for the first time also. You're right about there being so much for each day. I already have a phonics and spelling program and we also began using the Shurley English method last year so I'm being very selective when planning my week. Because of the end of selection tests that are provided, I'm careful not to skip over any of the comprehension activities. I'm pretty much skipping the spelling portion of the book. Some of the writing activities have been pretty good, though.
We previously used Harcourt Brace Jovanovich Treasury of Literature (which I loved but had very little nonfiction). I liked the Teacher's Manual better than the one I have now. I don't really care for the day by day scheduling.
I'm still waiting for the Teaching Transparencies to arrive and they look like something I'll use often. Good luck!
