Preparing Students
By Jesica

Clip to ScrapBook
In the past I've had to talk to my class about certain students. I've never had a student in a wheelchair, it has always been social/emotional, etc. issues. I just try to be as straightforward as possible. I would explain
why student x is in the wheelchair. I would explain that students should not make fun of or put down the student in any way. The student may or may not be comfortable with questions so I would ask student x before you discuss that with your students. Also, you need to tell your children if there will be any special accomodations they need to make - moving desks, etc. - so that they
are prepared for those things and they will go more smoothly and seem more routine for the new student. That's all I can think of right now - I'm sure there are some others out there with some more great advice, perhaps some who've been in this particular situation.
