something I do
By Jo

Clip to ScrapBook
Something I do is print out a chronological listing of grades for each child. (We use a computer grade book.) On the print out it gives the class average for each assignment. I highlight all of the scores the child has that
are at or above the class average. At first the parent kind of panics when they see all the highlights, BUT once they realize the highlights are a GOOD thing, they relax. It begins our conference on a very positive note in almost every instance. It almost takes the steam out of their sails before we begin. I, too, make a list on every child with 3 or 4 good traits and 3 or 4 suggestions
on improvement. I also ask the parent after looking at grades what concerns he/she has that we need to discuss first. Then I look over my list to be sure all have been covered. We just had conferences on Thursday. I had 18 and ALL were positive. It was a good night.
