    Strategy Fan

One way I get my 3rd grade (and 4th and 5th last year) students to actually use the reading strategies while we read is to have each of them make a "Strategy Fan". This is basically a 6 card fan, each card a different color, to represent each of the six basic reading comprehension strategies we use with our reading program (predict, visualize, summarize, clarify, questioning, and making connections) While we are reading a selection as a class (either in pairs, popcorn reading, teacher read, tape read, etc...) the students simply hold up the card on the fan when they wish to impliment a strategy. Then we stop reading and the child uses the strategy.

This has really motivated my kids to actively use the strategies. It also helps me to chose kids that are going to use different strategies (as I can visually see, by color, which strategy the kids want to use. Then I am sure not to always have kids predicting, for example. I am able to mix it up)
