rubrics
By Tanya

Mary,
I felt like you a few years ago and now I love using a writing rubric. I use as my model the rubric the state uses to grade our 4th grade assessments (I'm a 4th grade teacher.) My change of heart toward rubrics
occurred last year when I was formally trained by my district on how to use this model. A number of teachers worked together, we graded writing together, our confidence grew and now I can use the model as a template for any assignment I give. It was through the support of many other teachers that I felt successful. The benefits have been great-- it's easier to grade, the kids can use
it to grade each other's work, and best of all my class test scores for writing last year--90% met standard. I really credit understanding and using the rubric for that high rate of success! See if your district has one rubric that they recommend and maybe a group of teachers can meet to grade student's work in the same way.
