handling non-grades
By AM

Clip to ScrapBook
Hi. I taught K-1 for awhile and we never had grades for subjects. I would totally hate it though if I were to have any children older than that and had to give them non-grades. What do they get an S for Satisfactory, N for
non, etc.???
What you could do is develop some rubrics for grading them individually and in groups. Sometimes teachers editions have resource books with them that have a lot of rubrics under performance assessments. You could decide as a grade level to make, for example, the rubric "grade" of 4 to be S, 3 to be N, 2 to be Unsatisfactory, and so on... Thats the only thing I can think
of is using a rubric. If you have a good system developed ahead of time you can explain this new grading to parents at the conference. Most will be supportive. You will always have one or two that would whine and wail if you have them a winning lottery ticket at a parent conference so just be realistic. Good luck.
