reading vs. reading comprehension

I actually do see a difference between reading and reading comprehension. (In Ohio, there are different reading standards for phonemic awareness/sight words & reading comprehension-they are different.) We used to have a
school psychologist who would test kids and would report to us that they could read just fine when what they could really do was pronounce/sound out words. I tried to explain the difference to him like this: I can read a medical textbook or a physics text by Stephen Hawking (sp?). Just because I can read it, doesn't mean I have an inkling about what it really means.
I would suggest
breaking your reading down into small sections. Have your students stop and explain what they've read before proceeding. If they can't they go back. Use short reading passages with basic literal comprehension questions. Gradually move into longer passages and stories with higher level types of questions. They will comprehend what they've read, maybe they just haven't been taught to slow down and self-monitor. You'll have to monitor for them until they get this. good luck!
