certification

Hi Niti.

You may be able to work in some private schools without certification. But I believe all public schools require state certification, especially with the reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education
Act (ESEA), also known as No Child Left Behind (NCLB).

How long you will need to study will depend some on the school you choose. Contact some schools in your area who offer certification programs and ask about their programs. I suspect it will depend on the courses you took as an undergrad.

Requirements vary widely from state to state, so you may want to tell us where you live.

Then people who live in your state (or country) can give you more specific advice.

Start with your state's department of education for a breakdown of state requirements. Most states probably post at least basic information on their web sites. If not, call and ask to have it sent to you.

I'm sorry this reply jumps around so much. I just added things as I thought of them.

Good luck to you.
