flex grouping
By JJ

Clip to ScrapBook
My idea of flexible grouping is that it's more flexible than ability grouping. For instance, with guided reading groups it's still ability based, but you are able to change the groups as the children learn and change. I
have changed my groups many times already this year. It's sometimes just one kid moving from one group to another. Some children learn a lot faster than others, and work through the groups more. Some kids need to stay at the same level for a long time, so they end up staying down, while others move up.

In other areas of the curriculum, flexible grouping can be done the same way.

In math, I do a lot of small group teaching. They're always changing, depending on what we're working on. Sometimes they don't need to be ability based, sometimes they do. Even if they are, and we're working on time, some kids are really good with time, but may be struggling with other things in math.

I guess it's really just being flexible with groups, and allowing them to change often.
