I taught two years using the Four Block method exactly the way it was meant to be taught...trust me, Pat Cunningham could have come in and checked for herself. I was in a pilot training program and Pat's own people trained me and my colleagues. Though there are things that I love about Four Blocks, without the small guided reading instruction, it just isn't enough. I also felt that the Working with Words components lacked so much in phonemic awareness and phonics. I highly recommend using F/P's small guided reading instruction methods with the centers. You will know so much about your children and where they are in reading if you use the F/P way. Your kids CAN do centers. Just make sure to really set those in motion before you start small groups for reading. I was able to do centers with a highly at-risk group of first graders at the school where I was before we moved (out of state). If those little guys could handle it, then your second graders can. Email if you want suggestions!
