I teach 2nd grade in Detroit and we are starting our 2nd year of Open Court. Even though my school is mostly Hispanic the district has NOT adopted the OC Spanish version but chose another instead, so I cannot comment on
that.
Our 2nd year is going somewhat better than the first year, but it is slow and complex. I did not find Workshop time to be enough time to work with the low kids no matter how I tried. We either "streamlined" the lessons to the max to give more time or had parapros or volunteers help out with the lower ones.
For the writer's notebooks, we actually bought binders last year, but
with 5 OC workbooks and then Math materials there wasn't room in their desks. Keeping the binders on the shelves was time consuming and not convenient. The kids also had some trouble with 3 ring binders and I was always nervous about "pinched fingers".
This year we bought spirals and used post-it type tabs to divide the sections. So far, so good.
