active participation strategies
By Mrs Wright

Clip to ScrapBook
I use several strategies during carpet time to keep kids engaged. I keep them active. When asking them questions, I will ask them to do something when they know the answer, such as giving me a thumbs up or putting their hands
on their head. If I see several kids off task, I will ask them to give me a thumbs up if I have their attention. Then I can start back up again with everyones attention. If I am reading a book, I will stop periodically and ask them a question. If a questions requires an answer that is a number, I will ask them to show me that number on their fingers. Anything that makes them "do" something
really gets their attention and they know that they must particiapte or you will know they are not listening. Another thing I do is when I ask a question, I'll have them whisper their answer to a neighbor. That way everyone, even the confused kids, will have a chance to raise their hand with an answer.

I hope that helps a little!
