active participation strategies By Mrs Wright

I use several strategies during carpet time to keep kids engaged. I keep them active. When asking them questions, I will ask them to do something when they know the answer, such as giving me a thumbs up or putting their hands| on their head. If I see several kids off task, I will ask them to give me a thumbs up if I have their attention. Then I can start back up again with everyones attention. If I am reading a book, I will stop periodically and ask them a question. If a questions requires an answer that is a number, I will ask them to show me that number on their fingers. Anything that makes them "do" something | | really gets their attention and they know that they must particiapte or you will know they are not listening. Another thing I do is when I ask a question, I'll have them whisper their answer to a neighbor. That way everyone, even the confused kids, will have a chance to raise their hand with an answer.I hope that helps a little!
