My first question is, are these ESL kids? That would definately answer the comprehension question, as many ESL kids are beautiful readers, but don't have a clue as to the meaning of the words. If not, I sure can't understand| where she is coming from, but DO understand your frustrations!! I always understood that READING was understanding what you read, accuracy and fluency are accuratly you read the individual words. It sounds as if your students are able to read accurately, but not comprehend the meaning behind the words. Do you have portfolios including work from last year? Were they expected | | to read any directions last year? I'm just dumbfounded! In our school, granted we have kids who can't read period, but generally speaking if they can read the words, they understand the material. I don't think I helped you any...sorry...but I'll be thinking about you.P.S. I'd begin with simple written directions and reading comprehension questions with the kids where the reading is BELOW their level (maybe even mid-first grade), If you can get them to successfully follow written directions, their confidence will really help them excell later.
