I have worked in the inner city for hmmm...21 years now. My first class was a fourth grade class that drove their first teacher out the door crying. I thought....how bad can little 9 year old children be? Well, to make
a long story short....the class was very similar to your husband's!
I agree very much with the above writer and just want to add a couple more suggestions.
*Let them know that you really, truly care about them. They need to know that you like them. They must know that you love them enough to be fair and to follow through with consequences and discipline.
*Your husband has to find

a way to motivate and reward the 5-6 children who are doing what they are supposed to do. I have always set up my classroom management based on "keeping the good kids good" even if they are not the majority.

This year will be very rough on your husband, but it WILL get better. He needs to look for baby steps of progress. Tell him to hang in there. The "ghetto" kids need him.
