Clip to ScrapBook
What about creating their own towsn? Put them in groups and have them make up a name for their town. Next, have them tell you what state this is in (It should be a made up city, but a real state). Then have the students draw
and cut out the shape of the map (It might help to have stencils for some if they aren't very good at drawing). Have them mark where their town is located in the state on the shape. Then have them use a map to fill in real towns that surround their made up town and write sentences saying- ______________ is to the east of __________ and things like that. Then you can have them write up
a little paragraph on features, landforms, and climate. The only thing is with the climate, have them be realistic, Ex) They can't say their city is located in southern Florida and temperatures stay freezing all year! You could also adopt this so you assign them a city and have them do research on it- what state it is in, what cities are located to east, west, south, and north of it, what kind of climate does it receive, etc.
