Totally Agree!
By Chicago Teacher

Clip to ScrapBook
Hi, I totally agree with the other advice that has been given already. I taught 1st/2nd multi-age at an inner city school, and I wanted to add that in addition to what was said, I would stress the importance of practicing
the basics OVER and OVER and OVER and OVER some more. My class practiced good listening behavior for literally DAYS at the beginning of the school year. And if they weren't listening, I would start again. If that meant we spent the entire day doing a 40 minute math lesson, than that is what I did because it showed the kids that I wasn't going to let up. It does get better! But it also
takes time, probably more time than one would expect.
Like I said, I also agree with the other posters, and I found that making connections with the kids and letting them know you (or your husband) care for them really makes a big difference. In my situation that meant being less informal (but still the authority) in many situations, and really working my hardest to deal with the students "things" individually and with patience!
Good luck! The rewards will be great!!
