Below Grade Level
By MJH

Clip to ScrapBook
My question would be: How can you teach children to read text from a basal when it's not on their level? You should implement some program that would allow students to be taught on the level that they are performing on.
Make sure that you focus on the skills and strategies that are needed for reading and comprehension and not just fluency. You can cover grade level skills during Shared Reading and then reinforce using materials that the students can actually read. This way they are exposed to both grade level material and their level of material. Please keep in mind to use nonfiction text since most
test are 80% nonfiction material.

This is my 14th year teaching in an inner city school and even though it's kindergarten I still use the Fountas and Pinnell Guided Reading (4 years). I already have 4 students who are ready and wanting to read, 4 who have some kind of a clue about letters and sounds, and the rest who think that the letter P is a square. I work with the students who need the most help everyday and my higher group at least twice a week.

If I can be of further help let me know.
