In my 5th grade classroom, I have several "levels" which students can work on. I have used poster board for each different level, then put the name of the level and the requirement on each piece of poster board. They aren't| all sequential, although many of them are. When students accomplish a level, they put a blue ribbon on that level with their name on it. For every 2 blue ribbons students earn, they can negotiate a reward with me. I've found students are much more motivated if they choose a reward rather than me telling them what they get. Some examples of the levels are: INDEPENDENT: Read | | any 3 books in your reading level, scoring 80% or higher, AND earn at least 10 points. SUPER: Read any 3 books at a 5.0 reading level worth at least 5 points, scoring 80% or higher. CHALLENGE: Earn 100 points.I think I have a total of 10 levels. It's not that much work for me (I just use the same laminated posters over each year and run off a bunch of blue ribbons on the copier). When students have completed a level, they let me know and I check their AR record to verify it.
