Traditional
By Jade

Clip to ScrapBook
We still do the traditional costume party, afternoon only. No costumes or makeup allowed in the morning, but no restriction on type of costume. The whole school parades the neighborhood on the same route every year and we
have parents and grandparents everywhere to watch the classes go by. We go by grade level with the first grade in the lead (too long a walk for Kdg.) If it is raining or snowing, we parade in the gym and invite the spectators inside. The students are expected to wear clothing appropriate for the weather--for example, no sleeveless ballerinas when the temp is below 40, somewhat typical
for our community!

Upon returning to the classroom, most classes have games and treats provided by parents. I usually play the Halloween Jingo (similar to Bingo) game and then we eat while we watch the Magic Schoolbus video on sound (haunted houses) and/or bats (to culminate an October unit). Our second grades stop off at a nearby nursing home to sing Halloween songs for the residents as a part of their celebration.

We also still have neighborhood trick or treating (can you tell I'm in a small town?) so we're all glad Halloween is on a Friday this year!
