terms of endearment
By sjoom

Clip to ScrapBook
Well, I'm a northerner through and through, and I've used terms of endearment like crazy with second graders. I couldn't help myself - I loved them and these words just came naturally out of my mouth. I've not done this with
5th graders, but if the kids don't mind, I think it's fine if other people do it (I did other things that told the 5th graders how precious they were to me).

I have a good friend who instructed me when her son was born that I was under no circumstances to use a nickname for him ever. I call the child by his name (even though it irks me that I'm not allowed to use any diminutive for

an infant, toddler, etc. whom I adore), but I call him sweetie, cutie, and other things these days, and she seems to be okay with that.

I think it all depends on whether the child likes it or not (and less so what the parents think - I personally think my friend's stance is idiotic, but she is the mom). If a kid hates being called by anything other than his/her name, then use the name, but no terms of endearment for any child ever? Give me a break!
