Take the Survival Challenge
By Kim

Clip to ScrapBook
I too did something similiar. We read Julie of the Wolves, Island of the Blue Dolphins, and Hatchet. Each group came up with a 'tribal name' based on something from the book. For the bulletin board, I copied the cover of
the books and put these around a campfire. Each tribes' name was above the book they were reading. I titled it with "Take the Survivor Challenge". I based behavior, group cooperation, and classwork for ways to earn 'tribal points'. About twice a week we stopped reading and I taught a skill lesson. I taught the same skill lesson as whole class. Each tribe did the independent practice
part of the lesson based on their book (for example: story elements, cause and effect, compare and contrast, etc.). They presented their work and earned points for the 'tribe'. I really never came up with survival activities for the whole class-except for integrating PE games and overall behavior to earn points for their tribe. E-mail me if you have any other questions or suggestions for me. I plan to do this again-currently I am reading The Sign of the Beaver (also a survival book), but not doing Literature Circles with different books-so anything you can send my way would be appreciated. I hope this helps you.
