I agree with you about this "No Child Left Behind" being awful! We haven't received our scores on the NJ ASK test from last spring yet, and I have a feeling I won't want to see them! That being said, I teach reading using| a variety of methods. We have our Scholastic Literacy Place anthology, and I use that for a large group shared reading and response one day a week. That way, the target skill introduced can be applied to smaller groups as well. I also use the grammar skills from Scholastic, because we are responsible for giving the end-of-the -unit tests. We have leveled book bags that the children read | | from during reading time where they are not involved with Scholastic and/or literature groups. I conduct running record assessments at the beginning of the year and use the benchmark leveled books from the levels in Guiding Readers and Writers by Fountas and Pinnell. We then select the book bags together using the student's interests and these levels.Students write book letters to me each week to discuss the book they are currently reading from their bags, and we have conferences on a specified day of the week. I also have literature groups that meet weekly, and students read and respond to sections of that text.
