I think kindergarten children need an opportunity to play. Most kindergartens do not allow for play and have replaced the K curriculum with very structured academics. I would have a housekeeping area, a block area, art| area, science exploration station, music area, library and publishing center, and a dramatic play area. The dramatic play area could be used to faciltate alot of symbolic experiences and would be much more beneficial to kindergarten, especially those who are struggling. Kids have much difficulty with formal symbols at 5, especially when they have not developed language-mediated play. | | Experimenting and developing symbols in a play experience would greatly help in facilitating formal symbol systems. For example, the dramatic play area could incorporate a a restaurant theme. Children would create a theme for their restaurant, decorations, and a menu. The menu can incorporate words related to food. A word wall near the area could encourage children to write on their menu. Invented spelling can be encouraged in the block area as children create road signs, draw maps, etc. the publishing center can have several "featured words" posted. And children develop stories based on those featured words. I think alot of your ideas are great, and when incorporated into play themes, they would be extremely successful!
