This is my third year of teaching. My first two years (teaching different grades) I stayed at school on average for 10 hours per day or more. So far this year, which has only been 1 and a half weeks, I've been staying about 8 - 9 hours. Big improvement, huh? Here's what I'm finding that has helped me: 1. make sure that kids do as much as they can in the way of cleaning up the room (so I don't have to do it). 2. Don't assign busy work that you have to correct. I use more centers and open ended activities that don't require correcting 3. Make lists of things that I need to do so that I focus | | on what needs to be done. 4. Do things in order of importance. Don't start with something that really isn't necessary for tomorrow. Start with what's important for tomorrow, then do as much else as you have time for. 5. Understand that you can't do it all. Learn to say no to others and to yourself. Overall though, it seems to me that if you are a good teacher who truly cares about your students and their learning, there is no way to avoid putting in extra hours. Good luck!
