Low students
By Debi

I also work with many lower achieving students in a 6th grade inclusion class. While some students are on grade level, many are not and the range is wide. We generally use more than one version of whatever assignment, skill
etc. we are working on.
To be honest, we would not just give the students one word per day, even though they are significantly below. We would give them at least 10 spelling words per week, at a level that is right for them (even if it is primer). The words may come from the Dolch sight word list or may be thematically arranged or may come from whatever method you are using to
teach them to read. We would use a variety of activities, typically one per night for homework practice. Some ideas are:
putting the words in ABC order, writing out the words with missing letters and having them fill in what is missing, having them practice the word 5x each, break the word into syllables, making their own flashcards, trying to tell a story etc. The only way their skills will progress is for them to practice over and over and one word at a time does not give them as much opportunity to use them in sentences, context etc. What method of reading instruction are you using?
