We give out a packet in our district. One thing that we include is a page in each main subject area to explain briefly where we are headed in that area. For instance we list the names of all the social studies-science units. (e.g. Westward-ho, Immigration, Migration, etc...) this helps parents to know so they can possibly link the learning taking place at home to school, as well as ideas to support in the content areas. Math includes an overview of the program layout, terms, and state testing. Reading includes information on the components of our reading program, guided reading, shared reading, ssr etc... It | | may sound like a bit much but it helps to get parents on same page. Maybe each teacher in your grade level can do one subject area and then compile handbook. I can forward you one of our pages if you want. As for donations... think of things you need for projects you will doing (cotton, pins, tissue paper, gliter, glue etc... Always baggies, tissues, pencils and any school supplies you might need. Maybe books if they are in short supply esp. maybe those read already by a child and then donate. I use a lot of math manipulatives parents can always donate there. (buttons, dominoes, small plastic containers etc... hope you found something useful. Good luck
