Asperger ideas By EMMA

Hi. I'm a ten year special education preschool teacher and have found that children with Aspergers respond extremely well to visual schedules. Get pictures for each transition this child will be required to make and post| them as his daily schedule. It may be horizontal or vertical (i've found both to work well). When you need to have him go from one activity to another teach him to check his schedule to see what comes next and have him take that picture off and carry it to the next activity where you have an envelope or something for him to put the picture. Invest in velcro! There is a computer program | | called Boardmaker that has thousands of appropriate pics or use actuall photographs if resources are limited. I have a vertical schedule on thick posterboard with velcro where I have all pics on before they come in to class. Bathroom, Circle, Play time, Clean up, Recall, Bathroom, Snack Brush Teeth, Story time, Group Home This allows them to see what is expected and how there day progresses and they get to go home at some point. Also, it helps tremendously if you have changes in the schedule such as Picture day or fire drills, assemblies... so they don't freak out. www.visualstrategies.com Good luck.
