Whenever I have used this book (or any book)I make sure I have questions for the students when they finish every 1-2 chapters. Their written responses let you know how their comprehension is. Go through the book and pull
out words that they may not know for them to look up and use in sentences.
For activites, We always have the student build a lunch box alarm. Kids come up with a lot of wonderful inventions, some by themselves and some with their parents help. We have the kids present them to the rest of the class. It is okay if they do not work really well but they have to be inventive.
The
students also pick their favorite author (individual, not as a group) and then students write to them. Many of the addresses for different authors are available on the web or at Scholastic.
The kids usually write a poem/song/rap about the one shoe in the road and perform for the class. For the end of the book we cook up all of the little hors'duevrs(can't spell it)that the mom made ofr the catering company. We make mini-cheesecakes, quiche, stuffed mushrooms, etc... Most of these ideas came from other people so I am taking no credit! The kids really look forward to all of the activities.
