math games By Tonda

I have been trying to add more hands-on activies and centers to my classroom as a personal goal this year. Here are a few the children have liked so far. Circumference- we measured pumpkins with strings and then checked| inches and centimeters by laying it out on a yardstick, also measured some with cloth tapemeasures. If you are willing to slice this can lead to diameter. Still a good lesson through Thanksgiving. Cardinal directions- put a dot in the center of a piece of graph paper and mark north, south, east and west-laminate. Use one regular die and another covered with white tape or stickers marked | | N, S, E, and W. I put stars on the other two sides of the die to make free choice. Two or three kids can play- they each need a different colored non-permanent marker. Roll both dice. The numeral is the number of spaces to move, the letter the direction, star is choice of direction. They race from the center dot off the edge of page to win. Multiplication or Addition War- as the children slap down their cards the first to call out the sum gets to keep the pile. Face cards are 10, aces 1, and a joker automatically wins. I have one for place value, but would take up some space to tell- and am afraid I am boring you who are reading!
