new student By maryellen

Try this - we do it in our school and it works just great! The child and family are heartily welcomed by the secretary, and they sit with her to fill out the registration form. She takes them on a building tour, and explains| our school policies - one of them being that the student will start in her new classroom TOMORROW! She gives them a welcoming letter along with her supply list that explains it...saying as the day has started, and the new teacher has no desk, locker, books, supplies or even a sharp pencil ready for her new student, it is an uncomfortable start for the child. Tomorrow, these items | | will all be in place, the class will be expecting her, and anxious to meet her. (it even gives the teacher time to decide who will introduce her to the gym teacher, who will show her where the playground and washrooms are, etc. Sometimes I even have time to put up a computer made welcome banner!) The transition for the new student is so much happier and easier when she is expected and welcomed by name! (and it's sure easier on the teacher to have 24 hours notice). If the parents have phoned ahead a day or more previous, to notify the school of the new students arrival, this is enough notice, and the child starts on the day she arrives.
