Standing Next to One's Desk
By David Welch

Clip to ScrapBook
I stood next to my desk for a semester when I was in 4th grade. Why?

The seat was broken and stanted downhill.

When I sat in it I continuously leaned to my left side straining the whole right side of my body, and it
was very annoying to my concentration-I might add.

You try sitting slanted for an hour; I preffered to stand.

Yes, it irritated the teacher.

Not only did the seat slant, but the seat caused slivers if you slid across the seat to get in or out; the wood had been splintered.

Maybe there are real physical reasons 'why' a student refuses to sit and prefers to stand next to his desk.

Check it out.

My teacher continually ask me to sit down. I refused. I told her my chair was broken. She ignored my statements. I looked like an oppositional child getting away with a 'biggie' until she finally accepted my invitation to 'look' at my chair.

When she finally did look, as well as all the other kids, she looked rather foolish-which was not my intent. But, after that she never asked me to sit down again. All the other students accepted my standing and so did she. It fact, it sorta became a status position-standing next to my desk: Why? A student won an arguement against a teacher.
