Re: Graphs and Charts
By M.

Clip to ScrapBook
My favorite activity for graphing is what I call M&M graphing. I have each student bring in a regular size bag of M&M's (By regular, I mean, not the party size, not the king size, not the M&M manys, and not the fun packs
given out at Halloween). They can not be the holiday colors either. I given them notice of this on Monday, and then they need to be brought to school on Friday. When Friday comes, they each get a paper plate and can work anywhere in the room. I also put on music to make it fun. They each get a packet. The first questions are to be answered before the bag is opened. They have to first predict
how many M&M's were in the bag and write that down. Next I have a list of colors listing all of the M&M colors. They have to predict how many of each color is in the bag and write it down. Then they can open the bag and anwer the questions that ask how many of each color and what was the total. Then they have to make a line graph, pie graph, pictograph, and bar graph, showing how many of each color were in the bag. When they are finihed, they can eat the M&m's and they turn in their sheet! The students really enjoy the project.
