Long Term Responsibilities
By Cynthia

Clip to ScrapBook
Last year when I could not find a teaching position I was asked to do a long term sub. I started in October and it lasted until March. I still followed the basic structure of her lesson plan, but the choice of activities
were mine. I was able to meet with her and she let me know her expectations and where the class needed to be in Decemeber and in March when she came back. Also, I met with the other first grade team members and they helped me to plan appropriately.
As for classroom management, she asked me to follow her behavior plan, so that when she came back the transition wasn't too dificult.
I did somewhat. Sometimes in a long term situation you need to do what works best for you. However, I did discuss the change with her and the principal.
As for other duties, I had to go to the weekly staff meetings, participate in professional development days, contact and conference with parents, be part of the language team, and part of the winter and spring music concerts. I also had to refer a student for special education and was part of this whole process.
Remember in all of this to do your best and to make connections with staff members and administrators. This district hired only two teachers this year and I happened to be the first on the list. Hope this helps.
