Trophies By Debbie

My system adopted Trophies a year ago. I'll admit last year was hard. This year is easier because I had the summer to really go through the series and find what I wanted to do. Couple of suggestions. 1) When doing the comprehension| end of selection test, have the students record the page number where they located the answer. This forces them to go back through the story. Also, the comp. questions are in sequential order so the students learn that they can't have page 32 after page 37. 2) Try making your spelling a packet. I found that my students enjoy getting all of the spelling assignments on Monday. | | They know that these "packets" are due on Friday. I found spelling has improved because the students don't feel the pressure and can take their time looking up answers. 3) Vocabulary: I use the ELL workbook when introducing the vocabulary in conjunction with the Vocabulary Power in the book. I do vocab on Monday and then give a vocab quiz on Wednesday. (Simple quiz: I write the words on the board, read the definition to students and they have to write the correct word on their paper.) Another bit of advice. Concentrate on the Focus Skills as much as possible. These are the lessons I have found to really cover my states standards. Good luck and keep us posted on how you're doing. It does get easier.
