Map lesson
By Suzie

Clip to ScrapBook
Hi from Australia Holly,

If it doesn't HAVE to be totally educational and factual, I have a heaps-fun idea for you! Kids this age LOVE pirates. Introduce Pirates as an introduction in English/ Society class or whatever
and discuss a brief history perhaps eg. Blackbeard-- my class LOVED hearing about this huge, nasty man!
Send a note home asking parents to dress their child as a pirate on the day when you wish to do your map lesson... and do your ART lesson on making/ painting a TREASURE MAP! Use big sheets of paper and remember, demonstrate how to do one first! Make a code eg. ~~ symbols for a lake
that you could call, say 'DEATH LAKE' and ^^^ for 'BLOOD MOUNTAIN' etc. Use your imagination
Remember too... X marks the spot!
Also, have your own small made-up treasure map ready that you design at home and have a 'treasure' of lollies wrapped in black paper that YOU hide somewhere in the school grounds in the morning.... later on, yell out "AHOY-ME HEARTIES!", grab the map and go on a treasure hunt for that treasure with great gusto!
I did all this stuff with my Year 1's and my kids had a blast and acted like pirates all day.
This is just my own ideas... hope I've helped! Have fun and good luck!
