some things I do By Christine

We cook muffins once a week and sell them to the faculty and staff, which gives them practice with following the recipe, money handling, sorting-- all kinds of stuff. Another good thing it does is give us a small amount| of money that we can use throughout the year. I have at least 2 trips out a week; one is either the library (they mostly get videos, CDs, and magazines) or to the supermarket to buy supplies for the muffin business. The other time out might be a "scavenger hunt" for certain items in a store, or visiting the post office. We do some "drill" type things with money and time telling, but mostly | | I try to ask them what time it is throughout the day. I have a computer with internet access in my room, and I was able to find some appropriate eduational games at www.funschool.com and www.funbrain.com (among others) that 1 or 2 students can do independently while I work with other groups. Finding independent work is one of the hardest things. I have resorted to simple copying, which has some value (copying their home address or phone number), but it's often just because I really need to be able to talk with one of the others about counting nickels and dimes together and need the rest of the students to be busy. I am feeling as if I've thrown in everything but the kitchen sink here. Hopefully, some of it is helpful!
