Veteran's Day
By 4th grade teacher

Clip to ScrapBook
We, too, have a great assembly for Veteran's Day. We invite community Veterans in to speak to our 4th and 5th graders. I like our hallways to look real patriotic when they come to visit.

Some of the things we've done.....

Made
an American flag out of red, white, and blue handprints.

Memorized and recited a Veteran's Day poem.

Rewrote the Pledge of Allegiance in our own words after learning the definition of the hard words in the pledge (pledge, allegiance, republic, Nation, individible, liberty, justice). Our new pledges cannot use those words but must be rewritten using our own words. We then

paint large patriotic bells and attach the paragraph to them. They turn out really nice.

We have written about "What America Means to Me" in poetry or essays.

We have studied the National symbols, made large pictures of them, and wrote a report.

We brainstormed, both at school and at home with parents, about "100 Reasons Why It's Great to Live in America". Ideas were posted on small stars on a large mural. Looked real neat in our hallway!

We've asked our students to furnish names and area of service of fathers, grandparents, great-grandfathers, or anyone who has served for our country. That information is transferred to individual flags and hung in the hallway. Looks quite impressive.

I know there's more, but that's all I can come up with now. I'll post again if I think of anything. Sure hope this helps!
