centers By Susan/5th

I do centers once a week and they love it! I do them on Fridays because that's when my gifted kids are out, so I only have 20 kids then. I have 6 groups, with 3-4 kids in each. They rotate every 15 min. (it's all the time we have!). My centers typically are: 1. Computers - selected software like Math Blaster or Reading Blaster 2. Newspaper - I get it every Friday and they're reading the Wright Brothers story. When that ends, they'll do other activities with the paper. 3. Social Studies - an art activity related to it, a thinking map, or a worksheet to reinforce what we've studied. 4. | | Science - Same as above. 5. Games - educational ones like Scrabble or Who Wants to be a Millionaire. 6. Reading - my reading corner where they read books related to our reading series. Others I've done included: 7. Spelling - stamps to stamp out the words for the week. 8. Tutoring - I help with a test that didn't go well - or catch up on missed work. 9. Writing - peer editing on an assignment we're working on. 10. Math - "shop" for things in Sunday advertisements (I've saved) with pretend money. I explain all the centers ahead of time, and they know they have to help each other with it, instead of running to me with questions (unless none of them understand). I use the time to tutor others or write in their weekly planner (that gets signed every Friday).
