Testing and Standards By Newcomer
|
| I agree with you that all these things are important. What ever happened to looking at the "whole child?" I just finished my degree and am working on my teaching credential. I have worked as an aide for almost nine years. It took me a long time to decide that I really wanted to teach and I have worked hard to get to the point where I can. Though I love working with the kids, now I sometimes wonder if I made the right choice. Unfortunately I have to agree that there is way too much testing. The other thing that is hard is that more things keep being added to what we have to teach. At the school I work at, on top of everything else, first graders are supposed to have word processing skills by the end of the year. With only two computers in the room and an hour of computer lab a week, how is that really possible along with everything else? I have been working one on one to have them type their spelling words, but it is very time consuming. In my classes, the professors tell us that integration is the answer. But in "real life" that is hard to do. My own four children range in age from seven to twenty-one. I have seen the pendulum swing back and forth in many areas over the years. I plan to do the best I can with what I have to do right now and pray that things change again for the better.
