Two different approaches
By Joy

Clip to ScrapBook
I have seen two different approaches to kindergarten centers. One is a tubs approach where you can put activities, games, and supplies in various tubs for students to use either in a self-chosen way or directed way. (I
learned from a veteran teacher that you can get a great deal at medical supply stores for tubs.) You can get great stuff at Garage sales like blocks, puzzles, various items for math counting inventories, chalkboards, alphabet flashcards and games, and books. Some teachers also use class items like whiteboards and overhead projectors.

Personally I have 5 centers. I have made a book

nook with books in baskets by character or theme. I have an alphabet center with a bunch of items like foam letters, flash cards, paper, pencils, letter cookie cutters, etc. I have a technology center with a tape player and computer. I have a center with activities with a title one person. Then I have a reading table with me for small group led activities.

The reality is that you are going to have to spend some of your own money for these items but you can get great deals if you shop at the dollar store and clearance tables. It is harder for students to stay focused at centers in the beginning of the year but I just play them up as a special privilege so occasionally kids have to sit and look at a book at their seat if they want to run around or get others off tasks. I hope any of this helps.
