More Word Wall Ideas
By StephR

Clip to ScrapBook
We are all required to have a word wall as well. I have created mine on a large piece of felt (3 yards by 4 yards).

The words are taken from the dolche list...high frequency site words. I actually give 5 words a week.
During the week, we clap and snap the words, play games with them, etc...then post the words for the year on the board.

The words themselves are cut out and backed on various colors. I have the colors coordinated to parts of speech (all nouns are dark blue, all verbs are red, etc...)

Then I put a piece of velcro on the back and they stick to the felt. This has made it very mobile

(for when we rove in our year round setting) and easily taken down and put up from year to year.

They are arranged alphabetically. I have various letter labels, depending on the unit. I usually get the calendar cut outs and put letters (Aa, Bb, Cc...) on them for the unit. The velcro also allow for easy removal and placement of these as well.

Because these words are high frequency words, they are words that are constantly used in the students writing...if they are unsure how to spell a word, they simply look at the word wall and they easily spell it.

(One more thing, you can buy several word wall books with the words and activities to go along with them that are really good. They are at all the teacher stores.)
