centers

Clip to ScrapBook
Hello, Our classes started Sept.3 and I have now began centers. I have started a listening center, an ABC center, and will do a following direction center this next week. That is where I have directions up in a pocket chart
that tells in sequence how to make an art project. The kids really enjoy it and it helps with their reading compehension skills. I have a model of each step so there is usually always a successful project. The book "What are the other kids doing hile I teach small groups" will give you alot of great ideas. I also have a center where they correct a sentence that was written wrong.
I always have the class do a group session of the centers before I let them go on their own. That way they know excatly what is expected and they won't come up to me during the guided reading time. The book primary comprehension could also be used as center work. It is short stories with comprehension questions. However, once the kids get the hang of how to answer those questions they can do it really quick. The questions are usually in the same order as the sentences are written. I also have the kids stamp their spelling words as well as write them in rainbow style (each letter a different color), They also enjoy using bubble letters. You could incorporate your journal writing as a center also. I hope you can use some of these ideas. I'll keep thinking. I know it's hard when your students are low. Good luck.
