FIrst graders love to talk... but who doesn't. Before I begin any activity I always review the rules and expectations...example, if we are doing seatwork I remind the students that this is a quiet time. We will have a talk time next when we go to lunch,,,, In addition to the great ideas posted, I also have the letters RECESS in the front of the room, each letter on a seperate piece of paper with a magnet on the board. Each letter of the word "recess" stands for five minutes of recess time. We begin each day with all five letters, meaning we will have 30 minutes of recess time. Each time the whole | | class gets too chatty I simply remove one of the letter of the word recess which means we loose five minutes of our recess... each time they are too noisy they loose another letter. They can gain the letters back through good behavior. Before recess each day point out the letters and remind the students why they have lost recess time, or praise them for having the whole 30 minutes. Works like a charm!! Also remember that the kids are expected not to talk a lot in school. I do allow my studnets to talk during center time as long as they are producing their best work. If not, the following day they are to have silent centers which they hate!! good luck. Just think how noisy a room full of people our age would be if we had to work together 7 hours a day 180 days a year!
