The students write in journals first, then we gather for calendar. This involves weather, # of days in school, and singing. I read a story and after a quick stretch and drink they meet me at their desks for whole group| literacy. We do phonics, spelling, and language for 15 minutes each and reading groups for the last 1/2 hour. I keep things animated, use movement and singing and hands-on whenever possible. We also use workbooks when the page looks valuable. In our groups I listen to them read and we work on reading strategies and comprehension. After recess and snack we have DEAR time. I listen | | to a few kids read their Accelerated Reader books and they take a quiz if they are ready. Or I test a few on their sight words. Then if there is time a few can talk about the books they are reading. Then after another quick break we have writing workshop and handwriting. Right now we are working on a class book based on Brown Bear Brown Bear using animals of our region (Pribilof Islands Alaska) and we will create an electronic version to be viewed on line. After lunch we have social studies or science, then P.E. or library or music. Then math from 2:00-2:40. Fridays we have a math assessment and then free choice time. I have the advantage of a small class size and we have a great time. I try to work in games, music and silliness as much as possible. I'm not sure what you mean by "meat" but maybe this helps. Let me know. Kellie
